Being of Cuban descent I’m always on the lookout for an authentic meal or experience, without having to travel all the way down to Miami. Well, I found it, years ago in fact right here in West Palm Beach at Capri Bakery and Restaurant.
It’s one of those places that keeps with the theory in dining that ‘dives’ are often delicious! It’s something about an unpretentious restaurant, where the focus is on treating people like family, and serving up the best food for the best price that wins out every time.
At Capri you get that vibe even before you walk in. Facing Southern Blvd, it has a large open air space in front with some old-school cement picnic tables and benches. Often there is a group of mostly Cuban men, playing their favorite game, Double 9 dominos!
Once inside, you see tacky old-Cuban world décor and diner style tables with a wrap-around counter where the friendly staff is ready to serve you. The menu features specials of the day, for every day of the week, and ordering from here means you will get a fresh, delicious meal in just a few minutes.
I’ve tried just about everything on the menu, and have been pleasantly surprised the majority of the time. Being spoiled with a Cuban mom who can cook the heck out of anything, my Cuban palette is highly developed and so are my expectations when I eat out.
It’s also a great place if you’re having a party and want to cater it. Capri will put together an amazing combo for 25 people, usually only about $100. I would not do this review justice if I did not include let you know about their delicious bakery making authentic Cuban bread, coffee and pastries to die for!
No matter where you’re from, if you fancy some rice and beans and a delicious steak, pork or chicken flavored in the uniquely Cuban style, Capri will deliver on taste and price-value. Que Rico!
